This is my first blog and I thought I would join the countless number of bloggers in the world. I am writing this blog to keep myself accountable to my training. I have very recently started a journey with inspiration from @rbuike read his story here…
My journey started 34 years ago on November 11 1976. Fast forward to early September 2010 the day I made a life change. I stepped on the scale to face the harsh truth of a 270 lb 33 year old. I mademyself a promise that day to never be there again.
Let me give you a little background on myself. I grew up in the small town of OakBank Manitoba 20 minutes east of Winnipeg. I was a very active and competitive kid. I grew up playing basketball and Alpine Ski Racing. I was a competitive alpine ski racer travelling across North America with the Manitoba Alpine Ski Team and competed in the Canada Games. When I retired from competitive sport I got LAZY. I stopped training and enjoyed eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. I began smoking cigarettes and living a completely unhealthy lifestyle.
Lets move to Dec 25th of 2008 the last day I smoked a cigarette. I ended up in the hospital shortly after Christmas dinner with the fear of a heart attack. That was an instant quit smoking sign. Turns out it was a panic attack not a heart attack however I remain smoke free for over two years but kept adding on the pounds.
At my low point (or should I say high point) at 270 lbs I downloaded an app called lose it. This app allows you to track you daily calories. I quickly lost some weight and was motivated to start excersicing again. This led me to download another app called C25K. This app gets you off the couch and running your first 5K in 9 weeks. I am happy to say I stuck with the program and completed my first 5K on Dec 4th 2010. With the help of my brother @rbuike slapping me in the ass during the run I managed to finish the race with no walking in 35 minutes. Wont win any races with that time but it is now my personal best. Now down 35 lbs (even after the holidays) I received a Christmas gift from @rbuike…wait for it…he signed me up to run my first 1/2 marathon haha great brother needless to sayI didnt get the iPad I was hoping for 🙂
Now that we all know where I started lets take this journey to see where I Finish. The Manitoba 1/2 Marathon is the goal this June. My blog will follow me through all the ups and downs getting me to the finish line. Thanks again big bro for the inspiration. My road to a healthy active lifestyle is starting over.
